How the market began

Over the last 60 years the Brenner market has become a fixture of trade in this border village. It has existed since as far back as 1950. Since the very beginning it has been held on the 5th and 20th of every month; if one of these days falls on a Sunday or public holiday, the market is held on the day before. The Brenner market came about when, one day in 1950, a few market women from Bolzano ended up at the Brenner because they forgot to get off at Sterzing, where they had actually meant to go. Once at the Brenner, they set up their stalls and, lo and behold, business went surprisingly well, so they kept coming back to the Brenner to sell their goods.
